USASFC Welcomes new senior enlisted advisor
U.S. Army Special Operations Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service Apr. 11, 2006) – Army Special Forces welcomed a new command sergeant major as its senior enlisted advisor in a ceremony held here April 6.

Command Sgt. Maj. Parry L. Baer assumed responsibility as the senior enlisted advisor for U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Abn.) from Command Sgt. Maj. Denzil L. Ames to during a Change of Responsibility Ceremony at Meadows Plaza.

Ames served for almost six years alongside four commanding generals, beginning with Brig. Gen. Frank J. Toney, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey C. Lambert, Brig. Gen. Gary M. Jones, and now with Brig. Gen. John F. Mulholland.

There has never been a stronger advocate for the needs of the Soldiers or a better example of professionalism and attention to detail than Command Sgt. Maj. Ames, said Mulholland. It has always been about the team and it has always been about those with whom he serves. He is the example of what it means to be the Quiet Professional.

Ames entered the Army in 1976. His first assignment brought him to Fort Bragg where he served with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. In 1979 Ames, a native of San Diego, Calif., completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant.

While assigned to 5th SFG (A) he served in positions as junior and senior SF medical sergeant and culminated his tour as a team sergeant. In September 1988, he was reassigned to the Noncommissioned Officer Academy, U. S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center, here as a Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course Small Group leader. He later held the positions of Chief of Operations, Advance Noncommissioned Officer Course Chief Instructor and Assistant Commandant.

Ames was then reassigned in August 1992 to Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, NC as a team sergeant. In January 1995, he was reassigned to Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, United States Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, NC as the operations sergeant major. In May 1996, he was appointed as the CSM of 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). From October 1998 to July 2000, he served as the command sergeant major of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Since July 2000, Ames has served as the command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (A).

"My ability to be successful here at SF Command would not have been possible without the support of the (SF) group CSMs, to which I pass all my thanks. I could not have done it without a more professional group of senior NCOs," said Ames.

Ames completed the following military schools: Primary Leadership Development Course, Special Forces Medical Sergeant Course, Special Forces Military Free Fall Course, Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Arabic-Egyptian Language Course, Static Line Jumpmaster Course, Special Forces Engineer Sergeant Course, Special Forces Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Course, Special Operations Training Course, AMEDD Advance Noncommissioned Officer Course, Special Forces Operation and Intelligence Course, French Basic Language Course, and the United States Army Sergeants Major Course.

His awards and decorations include seven Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 4, and the Army Service Ribbon, the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, the Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Badge and the Special Forces Tab. He has been awarded parachute wings from Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Kenya, Jordan, Spain, Morocco, Moroccan Commando, and Zaire Armed Forces Free Fall Parachutist Badge.

"As I close this chapter of my life today, I know I'm being replaced by one of the finest CSMs that we have in the force today - Command Sgt. Maj. Parry Baer," said Ames. "Out of the 55 months this command has been in combat, Parry Baer has been deployed for 33 of them."

Command Sgt. Maj. Parry L. Baer entered the Army in Nov. 1977 as a Combat Engineer. After completion of Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Miss., he was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (Mech.) before volunteering for airborne and Special Forces training as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant in 1980.

Baer, a native of Croswell, Mich., began his SF career in 1981 at 5th SFG (A). His assignments there include several positions on Special Forces Operational Detachments Alpha 533, 534 and 514 within the 1st Battalion, 5th SFG (A). Baer has served as a battalion command sergeant major for 5th SFG (A) and 7th SFG (A) as well as the group command sergeant major for 5th SFG (A).

"It is an honor and a privilege to be here today as the United States Army Special Forces Command Sergeant Major," said Baer. "You do not get to this position without a lot of support, mentorship, and guidance."

Baer has served in combat operations from Operation Desert Storm through the current Global War on Terrorism. In addition to completing Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Training at every level, Baer’s military education includes completion of the Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, Special Forces Qualification Course, Static-line Jumpmaster, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape Course, Special Forces Operations and Intelligence Course, Joint Firepower Control Course, Special Operations Training Course, Turkish Language Course, Basic Military Free Fall Course and Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Course.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, one Bronze Star Medal for valor, three Bronze Star Medals for service, four Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medal (9th Award) and National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award). He has earned the Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award), Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, and Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Badge. He also has been awarded the Parachute Badge from the following countries: Greece, Jordan, Kenya, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

"Today we may change out command sergeant majors," Baer said, "but what remains constant is the regiment and units whose colors you see on the field today that make up the United States Army Special Forces Command. The accomplishments of the Soldiers of this command on the battlefield from Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, Colombia and numerous other locations, are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Soldiers of this command."

Baer concluded, "We're in a fight that takes a team effort from the ODAs on up through every support element and staff. That team effort has made us successful as we continue to take the fight to our enemies."

If I am not mistaken, Frank Toney was a CPT in C/3 5th SFG during the same period Baer was there. I don't recall Baer but I was on A-594 for part of that period also. The surprising part of all of this is Frank Toney made it to BG. He was not really political and more of a Ranger mentality than an SF mentality at that time. With all of that, he was a good guy.

I was on ODA 515 (HALO) and it was changed to 514 in 1983. Baer was there (in 5th Gp) a year or so before me. I remember him well.

I also rememebr Frank Toney. Did someone say "Ranger" mentality.... I almost gave LTC Frank Toney a heart attack when he first saw me in Kuwait..... I had a "Fu Manchu" that almost went down to my chin. I also had a reason for the stash..... Good thing CSM Dennison was also standing there.....
