Not exactly "Gourmet", but I keep hearing that the "boxes" of wine do a great job of maintaining the flavor of wine even if it takes a week or two to go through the box.

Dad and I drink the Gallo Hearty Burgundy and various Gallo whites in the the, IIRC, 3 liter jugs as our "vin ordinaire." I heard recommendations for;

- Black Box from Napa costs about $25.00 for 2 liters

- Hardy's Shiraz from Australia is about $18.00 for 2 liters

Anyone tried either of these? Any others you'd recommend?

My Wife and Mother-in-law love the boxed wines. I think it has to do with never opening it. The air never gets in it. The light plastic liner just shrinks as you drain the wine off.

Me? I'm sipping on a Killian's Irish Red right now.

You and Terry are both snobs.:p

SwatSurgeon will tell you a horror story about leaving wine at my house only to be told "that will be a great wine to use to deglaze the pan next time I make....."

I don't drink wine, I use it to cook with.....

Nah, not a wine snob it is my drink of choice with dinnner. I am more than willing to consume a few cold brews, Tequila, good Bourbon, Single Malt Scotch,
Pedro Ximenez, Sherry (before dinner), Vintage Port, Chateau d'Yquem, about the only liquor I do not particularly care for are the Anise flavored ones, Ouzo, Radke, etc.

Cinncinattus:

I was just having fun with you!

We were in Sicily a few years ago, had been wined and dined lavishly, and it was our last evening with our hosts, we were asked if we would like some real good local wine, we acquiesced, and our host ran down to the corner and returned with his favorite wine, he poured, and I asked what is it, and what's it's vintage, he gave me the name, and grinning, said "Vintage, last month".

I have not tried boxed wines, you should sample them, and consume what you like.

Hell, let us know!

Well then, you obviously are not shopping at the right grocers, I am sure that R L could send you a list.:)

Tried the "Black Box" Chardonnay. Ok, but nothing special. Not as strongly oaked as some CA chardonnays, actually sort of Chablis like.

Still looking for the Patreus and LaTour boxes.

Good report. R L has the list of "proper" grocers where you will find "Patreus and LaTour boxes."[/QUOTE]
