View Full Version : Swim the Strait '06
I am beginning to train to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar, from Spain to Morocco, in July, to raise funds and awareness for disabled veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. The benefiting charity is the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes.
Please see www.swimthestrait06.com
We also have varying levels of corporate sponsorship available. For more information, see the website or pm me.
Thanks for your support!

Watch out for the commercial ship traffic - getting hit by one of those bad boys could ruin your whole weekend. Good luck with the swim!

Email update ...
.................................................. .................................................. ...
After 9 days of waiting for the winds and waves to subside, we finally
had our window. It wasn´t open for much time, and the conditions
were
far from ideal, but we decided to go for it. On the 19th of July, at
five in the afternoon, we left the coast of Spain and started swimming
for Africa. Because of the late hour, we risked having to finish the
swim in darkness.
4 hours and 55 minutes after we began, at last light, we made it.
It was definitely the challenge it was meant to be. We battled
seasickness, swells, cold water, and cramps for most of the crossing.
When we were done, Rush and I got pulled into the boat with locked-out
legs and clenched teeth. We couldn´t say much, but we did manage to
joke that we were never swimming again - ever.
During the swim, I had my doubts about making it across. But, the
swim was truly for Joe and Kenny and JR and Craig and the thousands of
other wounded veterans who have sacrificed and suffered more we could
ever fathom. Though Rush and I were physically following a boat to
mark our way across the Strait, mentally we were following the
examples set by these brave men and women. Every day they overcome
their obstacles; for just one day Rush and I made a promise to
overcome ours. So, to the disabled veterans who broke the waves:
thank you.
Of course, none of this would have been possible if not for the
enthusiastic and generous support of our family, friends, and the
hundreds of donors and supporters from all over the world. The
outpouring of participation has been humbling for Rush and me. And it
has been absolutely life-changing for the veterans helped by your
donations. Together, we´ve made a difference and accomplished our
goals of raising funds and awareness for this apolitical and human
cause. This whole endeavor was a team effort and we couldn´t have
done it without you. So, to all of you who swam with us: thank you.
But, it´s not over. For Rush and me, the challenge was in getting
from point A to point B. But, for many disabled veterans, the
challenge can be life-long. We may be done swimming, but we all can
continue to make a difference. Our website will be taking donations
through September and we´ll maintain our fundraising efforts at least
until then.
You all have done so much already; please keep spreading the word.
Thank you again.
