Wait tme after basic and airborne?

Hello,

I was talking to a friend of mine who enlisted with and option 40 contract, he said that he got screwed out of RIP and Ranger school because there was a huge waiting list. Basically he waited for a year and still didn't get in so he ended up saying fuck it and went airborne infantry instead. He also told me that the same was true for SFAS. I've been reading the forum and it seems that this is false but wanted to make sure as I am leaving to sign my 18x contract in 5 hours. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Since you're in a hurry and sound a little discouraged I will answer what I know. I have a buddy with an 18X contract that is in the current SFAS class. He had a wait, called "holding", between Airborne and SOPC I, but no detour.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any idea how long he was in holding. Also J dub when are you shipping out? I guess its possible he quit although hes not someone i would think would lie about that sort of thing and he was pretty squared away as far as being able to physically make it.

You are new to the Army, so let me clue you in on something.

There is a new rumor started in your local outhouse every minute of every day by people who have nothing better to do.

You cannot be screwed out of anything that is in writing. As far as 18X goes, that means that you get at least one shot as far as your mind and body will take you. This will happen at the Army's pace, not yours.

It sounds to me like your buddy washed out and made up a cover story. If you read a little here before posting again, you will see recent posts concerning the "whole man" that we are looking for. Being a PT stud is not everything.

If you post every rumor that you hear about, I predict that you will be off this site by the weekend.

Good luck and quit worrying about other people. Just get yourself ready.

Well I defianately learned the hurry up and wait lesson today. Arrived at MEPS at 5:20, I then proceeded to the Army office where I was the first applicant to arrive all I needed to do was enlist. The liaison told me "Your the first one in line, shouldn't be to long." Fast forward to 2:30 pm and I finally talk to a job counselor, who then tells me that I am perfectly qualified except for my vision. I have perfect 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 correctable to 20/25 in the other. Apparently you have to have perfect 20/20. Anyone know of any way around this? This has felt like the longest day ever!!!! Anyone know the vision requirements or a way around them?

Have you checked my medical advice on the appropriate Intro thread?

If you had, you would have known the standard before you went.

You need to do better with your corrected vision, or request a waiver.

BTW, did you mean to say that you arrived at 0520 and were not seen till 1430?

Thanks for the luck I'm sure I'll need it. When I was reading the medical standards it stated that Airborne and Ranger quals were 20/20 in one eye and 20/100 in the other. Why is there such a different standard for Ranger school then Special Forces? Also how would I go about getting a waiver as my counselor was positive that she couldn't give me an SF contract. If you could point me in the right direction that would be great.

It occurs to me that you should be asking your recruiter these questions.

You seem to have a lot of them, some you need to resolve yourself. Laziness is not a desirable attribute.

I would tell the recruiters that if I can't get the 18X, then I am not interested, but that is just me.

I wasn't trying to come across as lazy. I did ask my recruiter these questions, he said what the job counselor says goes as far as getting a waiver, and was stumped as to why vision requirements would be different for SF and Rangers.
I dont plan on signing a contract that is non 18x thats why I didn't sign the 11x contract they offered me today.

I have just completed the first steps you are about to embark on and have a pretty solid idea of how things SHOULD be for you at both the recruiters and basic/airborne/SOPC. I would suggest, if you value your ability to use this site for its immense wealth of knowledge and experience, that you listen very, very, very carefully to what The Reaper has said, and what he has implied. You have put a target on your back, and Team Sergeant loves target interdiction. Use the search button and read the stickies, they will answer 99% of your questions. Otherwise, you will learn the hard way.
